ABOUT

Hall Management

Dinton Village Hall is a Registered Charity (305502) governed by a Board of Trustees who delegate day to day running of the village hall to the Village Hall Committee. The Village Hall Committee is made up of volunteers and is responsible for managing the daily operations of the hall ensuring it is well-maintained, safe and accessible for community use. They handle financial matters, such as budgeting and overseeing expenses. Additionally, they ensure compliance with legal and regulatory frameworks, maintain records and attend committee meetings to make key decisions. The AGM is held annually in June and residents from Dinton, and the surrounding area are welcome to come along to hear what progress has been made and what is planned for the next year. It is also an opportunity for them to let the Committee know what they would like from the village hall.

Our Purpose & Vision

Our purpose is to provide a community focused, accessible, and welcoming space where local people and groups can meet in safety, nurturing community spirit and strengthening relationships. Our vision is to provide a modern and valued village hall, meeting the needs and aspirations of Dinton residents and surrounding villages; promoting and facilitating community spirit and helping community bonds thrive.

Welcoming Environment: Create a space where everyone feels welcomed.

History of the Village Hall

Our village hall came into being in 1920 thanks to two benefactors, Bertram Philipps and Daniel Combes. It was originally an officer’s mess building brought across from Codford, but by the early 1980s, had deteriorated to such an extent that there was little revenue being generated from hiring out the premises.

Around 1986 the search to find a new plot to build a new hall began but one was never found. In 1988 a local developer offered to buy the then existing hall, but no sale was ever finalised. Eventually it was agreed the new village hall could be built on the Recreation Ground. Plans were drawn up and in 1989, outline planning permission was granted. Fund raising began in earnest and the village came together organising a multitude of fund-raising events. There were also several charitable organisations offering grants once a reasonable fund-raising total was reached.

Then, in 1995 the closure of RAF Chilmark provided the opportunity for the Trustees to purchase the plot of land upon which the current village hall stands and after five years a deal was finally agreed. But, before that a stroke of luck came in 1994 with the launch of the National Lottery. A successful application for funding resulted in a Lottery grant of £132,000 and in addition to the sale of the old hall for £75,000 and a significant amount around £40,000 provided by the village plus other grants, ensured the build could begin. Nine months later the current Village Hall was opened.
